Ghana plan pipelines to connect WAGP and fields to Tema power hub

THE government of Ghana is planning a gas master plan that will be the new blueprint for the country’s gas distribution industry. The master plan will see the construction of a new gas pipeline that will connect the West Africa Gas Pipeline (WAPG) to Ghana’s power plant hub in Tema.

Also being explored is the construction of an additional pipeline to the Tema hub from the country’s new gas fields that are expected to come online. Ghana’s only gas pipeline transport gas from the Jubilee field operated by Tullow to the Atuabo processing plant. However, the plant is limited to the Jubilee field’s current 80mmscf daily production.

The master plan is expected to accelerate the proposal for a new gas processing plant to process gas production from the TEN project and the greater Jubilee field. The plan will also develop a gas policy that will provide the regulatory framework for the nation’s gas industry. While constructing a new pipeline connecting WAGP to Tema power hub could allow Ghana harness the potential of the 460MMscf/d capacity further, the development of a local processing plant to process supply from Ghana’s fields should take priority. Tullow oil is drawing up a plan for the greater Jubilee project with an estimated 100Bcf reserve potential due year-end.
