AU to honour Zambia’s ex-president Kaunda at 2020 summit

THE process of honouring of Zambia’s founding President Kenneth Kaunda by the African Union (AU) will be completed at the organisation’s 2020 summit, a government official said on Monday.
Emmanuel Mwamba, Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the AU, said the process to honour Kaunda, who is also an African liberation struggle icon, was scheduled for completion at the continental body’s 2020 February summit.
According to him, two proposals, which include having one of the buildings or conference halls at the AU named after Kaunda, and a statue in the image of the former president have been made.
He added that it would be ideal to honour the only living founder of the Organisation of the African Unity, the forerunner to the AU, while he was still alive to personally witness the honour.
