AFRICA has shown great progress in the development of its solar energy markets over the last year.
The continent has experienced significant growth towards adding over 1.8GW of new solar installations in 2018, with 1.4GW coming from photovoltaic (PV) installations, which was a significant jump from the 786MW that was brought online in 2017.
To dissect this development, Solarplaza analysed the five fastest growing solar PV markets in Africa (The Big 5) in more detail, based on the 2018 statistics provided by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
The Big 5 report is part of the preparation for the fourth edition of the Unlocking Solar Capital: Africa conference, taking place on 16-17 October 2019 in Dakar, Senegal.
This two-day conference hosted by Solarplaza, in collaboration with GOGLA and FMO, is a unique international platform that brings together hundreds of representatives from development banks, investment funds, solar developers, IPPs, EPCs and various other stakeholders to engage in extensive discussions geared towards solving Africa’s solar energy funding gap – and getting projects realised.
During the event, Phanes Group will, for the third consecutive year, host their Solar Incubator.
The application window for entries has already closed, but was able to attract 900MW of solar PV project proposals from eight different countries.
The three most promising applicants will be invited to pitch their project on 17 October at USC Africa in front of a jury of industry experts. They will select a winner, which will be provided with extensive guidance from Phanes Group in making their project a reality.
