SOUTH Africa’s legislative capital of Cape Town on Friday lauded the news that Cape Town International Airport won the 2022 Best Airport in Africa award at the Skytrax World Airport Awards for the seventh consecutive year.
Run by Airports Company South Africa, Cape Town international airport is said to be Africa’s third largest airport, which processes more than 10 million passengers annually. The operator said it is Africa’s most award-winning airport.
‘This award is what brings global attention and gives airlines confidence in flying to the Mother City. It is also a show of economic readiness as a city, because connecting Cape Town to more cities and countries means that we can welcome more visitors and create more jobs through tourism and provide trade opportunities to increase export of proudly Cape products to the rest of the world,’ the city’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth Alderman James Vos said in a statement.
According to him, the airport recorded a recovery of 70 percent and 82 percent in May for international arrivals and domestic arrivals, respectively, when compared to the same period in 2019.
The official called for prioritising the planned expansion of the airport, due to the high volumes of passengers and aircraft movements.
